The Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi (EAD) has released 150 rehabilitated sea turtles into the sea at Al Hederyat Island.
The turtles are the first group of sea turtles to be gradually released into key marine areas in Abu Dhabi.
The sea turtles were rehabilitated after being rescued last year by the public, sea goers, fishermen, EAD rangers and strategic partners from government and the private sector.
At the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at The National Aquarium, the rescued turtles received veterinary care and treatment for ailments, infection, diseases and injuries.
A turtle named Al Hederyat had a satellite tracking system attached to its back to monitor its feeding and habitat.
The data collected from the turtle will be used to set plans and programmes for the conservation of sea turtles and minimise their risks.
Since 1999, EAD has been monitoring sea turtles in an effort to protect them.
